Make a Zipped Purse or Bag with a Gussetted Bottom
Lacuna Press 2017
The Template for the Zipped Purse. This can be scaled in any image editing software to be whatever size you want.
Fill the template with your custom design, print it onto fabric, then cut it out. You will need one piece of fabric for the inner and one piece for the outer of your zipped purse. This fabric is our custom printed latex backed cotton.
Lay the two pieces of fabric printed side together, with the fabric that will be your outside fabric at the bottom. Open the zip (it's easier to use a zip that's longer than the opening you are working with) and lay it facing down at one end of the fabric.
Take the half of the zip that is furthest away from the top of the fabric, and place it between the two pieces of fabric so that the edge with the teeth is further in between the fabric pieces, and the edge without the teeth is lined up with the top of the two pieces of fabric.
Sew the zip in place; you will be sewing through two pieces of fabric, with the zip in the middle. You should use a zipper foot for your machine, and should be able to "feel" the edge of the zip with teeth and sew close up to it.
Do the zip up. Then place the two halves of the other "opening ends" around it, making sure to line it up with the "opening end" already sewn.
It will probably help to put a couple of pins to hold it together before you start to sew.
Sew the other half of the zip in place. Again you should be able to "feel" the edge of the zip with teeth and sew close up to it.
Lay out the bag so that the zip parts are in the middle, with the printed fabric sides facing still. Then sew the two sides together, going across the zip in the middle.
Reach inside to undo the zip, then sew three of the gusseted corners together - placing the straight edge along the diagonal edges - leaving one unsewn corner that will end up being on the inside of the zipped purse.
Turn the zipped purse printed side out, by pulling it through the remaining open corner, then fold the edges of that corner in to make a seam allowance, put the gusset into place by placing the straight edge along the diagonal edges, then sew the seam together.
Turn the zipped purse right side out, and pull it into shape.
